Medications

Where appropriate, EPIC’s consultant doctors and mental health nurse prescribers may recommend medication alongside other therapies and support strategies. We prescribe for ADHD, sleep, anxiety, mood and other mental health conditions – always within a collaborative care plan that follows from a thorough assessment.

Do we prescribe medication?

Following initial assessment or completion of an assessment pathway, feedback is provided by the consultant or senior clinician and a collaborative care plan is recommended. Where appropriate – alongside other therapies and support strategies – our consultant doctors or mental health nurse prescribers may recommend medication. This includes medication for ADHD, sleep, anxiety, mood and other mental health conditions.

Some medications may be prescribed from an initial assessment appointment. Most will require a separate medication initiation appointment.

Initiation and follow-up

Most medications require monitoring and titration in follow-up appointments – virtually or in person. The frequency varies according to the medication, and will be discussed at the initiation appointment. Commitment to recommended follow-up is essential.

How do I get prescriptions?

Some medications can be prescribed by your GP following our advice. Others will require a shared care agreement. Some may need continued prescriptions from EPIC. Prescription charges and postage or delivery options for repeat prescriptions from EPIC are outlined on our repeat prescriptions page.

Please note: EPIC does not prescribe medication for children or young people unless they have been assessed and diagnosed through EPIC Solutions. Private prescriptions will require payment to your pharmacy for the cost of the medication when it is dispensed.

How much does it cost?

  • Medication initiation appointment – £210–£325
  • Follow-up appointments – £110–£160

Please see our costs explained.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my child need medication?

Not necessarily. Medication is recommended only where appropriate, alongside other therapies and support strategies, and always as part of a collaborative care plan that follows from a thorough assessment. The consultant or senior clinician will discuss whether medication is suitable for your child or young person.

Will my GP prescribe the medication?

Some medications can be prescribed by your GP following our advice. Others will require a shared care agreement between EPIC and your GP, and some may need to be continued through EPIC. The arrangement depends on the medication and on local GP practice policies.

What is a shared care agreement?

A shared care agreement is an arrangement between EPIC and your GP that allows ongoing prescribing of certain medications by the GP, while EPIC continues to provide specialist oversight. Not all GP practices offer shared care for all medications – we’ll discuss the options with you.

Why are follow-up appointments important?

Most medications require monitoring and titration – adjusting the dose to find what works best for the individual – through regular follow-up appointments. These can be virtual or in person. Commitment to recommended follow-up is essential for the medication to be prescribed safely and effectively.

My child was assessed elsewhere – can EPIC prescribe?

EPIC does not prescribe medication for children or young people unless they have been assessed and diagnosed through EPIC Solutions. If your child has been assessed elsewhere, we can talk through options – including whether a new assessment with EPIC might be appropriate.
