Sensory Integration Therapy for Children and Young People

EPIC offers Ayres Sensory Integration (ASI) therapy delivered by our specialist occupational therapists in a dedicated, fully equipped sensory gym. The therapy uses carefully designed play-based activities to help the nervous system respond more effectively to sensory input โ€“ supporting movement, coordination, regulation, attention and everyday participation.

What is sensory integration therapy?

Sensory integration therapy is a specialist, play-based therapeutic approach that helps children and young people make sense of the sensory information their bodies receive. The brain processes input from senses such as touch, movement, sound, sight, taste, smell and body awareness โ€“ but for some children, this process doesn’t happen smoothly, and sensory integration therapy can help.

When is sensory integration therapy recommended?

Sensory integration therapy is usually recommended by our specialist occupational therapist after she has fully assessed a child or young person’s sensory processing, movement and coordination over two assessment sessions. If sensory integration therapy is being recommended by another provider, our occupational therapist will need to carry out a single initial assessment to confirm suitability and plan the number and content of sessions before they can commence.

Who will benefit from sensory integration therapy?

Sensory integration therapy is helpful for children and young people with a range of sensory needs, difficulties with coordination and movement, emotional regulation challenges, and attention or engagement difficulties. This includes many children with diagnoses of autism, ADHD, and developmental coordination disorder (DCD).

How is sensory integration therapy delivered?

Sensory integration therapy is delivered by our occupational therapists, who have additional sensory integration training. The therapy is delivered in our dedicated, bespoke, fully equipped sensory gym. It is delivered in blocks of sessions prescribed by our occupational therapists โ€“ providing a structured but fun way of using carefully designed activities to help the nervous system respond more effectively to sensory input.
