Dyslexia Assessment for Children and Young People

EPIC offers consultant-led dyslexia assessment for children, young people and young adults across Devon and the South West. Whether you’re looking for an initial screening or a full diagnostic assessment, our specialist clinical psychologists build a clear picture of each individual’s strengths and the specific support they’ll benefit from.

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty that causes problems with certain aspects of learning such as reading, writing and spelling. It is not related to intelligence. Dyslexia can often coexist with other neurodevelopmental differences such as language disorders or DLD and ADHD or ADD.

How do we assess for dyslexia?

All assessments for dyslexia follow and are informed by the initial assessment with one of our consultants or senior clinicians. The dyslexia assessment will usually be with our consultant clinical psychologist.

We offer a dyslexia screening test or a full dyslexia assessment. The full assessment consists of:

  • Cognitive assessment
  • Test of Dyslexia (TOD)
  • Developmental history
  • Questionnaires completed by parents and carers, and by the school or education setting

Information on the individual assessments and what to expect is available from our administration team on request.

What is the outcome?

All of our assessments include a feedback appointment with the consultant or senior clinician to discuss the findings – this may be with our dyslexia specialist clinical psychologist. Recognising and understanding dyslexia is important for providing appropriate support, adaptations and interventions where needed. A full written report with recommendations is provided.

EPIC also has a specialist dyslexia teacher who can offer one-to-one support sessions. See our support packages for more.

How much does it cost?

  • Dyslexia screening or full assessment – £400 to £2,100, dependent on whether screening, full assessment, or combined with other assessment pathways

Please see our costs explained.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between dyslexia screening and a full assessment?

A screening test indicates whether dyslexia is likely and whether a full diagnostic assessment would be helpful. A full assessment provides a formal diagnosis, with detailed understanding of strengths and difficulties, and personalised recommendations for support, adaptations and interventions. Both are with our consultant clinical psychologist or dyslexia specialist.

Is dyslexia related to intelligence?

No. Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty that affects certain aspects of reading, writing and spelling. It is not related to overall intelligence – people with dyslexia have a full range of cognitive abilities.

Can dyslexia coexist with other conditions?

Yes – dyslexia often coexists with other neurodevelopmental differences such as developmental language disorder (DLD) and ADHD or ADD. Where this is suspected, the initial assessment will help us plan a combined or sequential approach to assessment.

Do you offer tutoring or follow-up support?

Yes. EPIC has a specialist dyslexia teacher who can offer one-to-one support sessions, and our Education Support Adviser can help translate assessment findings into practical adjustments at school. See support packages.

What happens after the assessment?

Every assessment includes a feedback appointment with the consultant or senior clinician to discuss the findings. You’ll also receive a full written report with personalised recommendations for support, adaptations and interventions.
