
Talking Therapies for Children and Young People
EPIC’s psychologists and mental health practitioners offer a wide range of talking therapies – also known as psychological therapies – for children, young people and young adults. From cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and compassion focused therapy (CFT) to systemic family therapy and trauma-focused approaches, sessions can be delivered individually or with the family, and are adapted for a wide range of presentations, including neurodiverse thinking styles.
What are talking therapies?
Talking therapies, also known as psychological therapies, are a form of treatment for a range of mental health difficulties. They involve talking to a trained professional about your thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
When are talking therapies recommended?
Following an initial assessment, talking therapies are appropriate for any young person who has the verbal communication skills and the willingness to engage in talking to explore and manage their difficulties.
Who are talking therapies with?
We have a highly skilled and experienced team of psychologists and mental health practitioners who can offer a range of talking therapies. These can be delivered individually to children and young people, or within the family or system around them. We have the expertise to adapt our therapeutic approaches to a wide range of presentations, including neurodiverse thinking styles.

Yes. Talking therapy at EPIC follows from an initial assessment or a completed assessment pathway, so the consultant or senior clinician can recommend the most appropriate therapeutic approach for your child or young person.
Yes. Talking therapies can be delivered individually to a child or young person, or with the family or system around them. Some approaches, such as systemic family therapy and Non-Violent Resistance (NVR), are designed specifically to work with parents, carers and families.
Yes. Our team has the expertise to adapt therapeutic approaches for a wide range of presentations, including neurodiverse thinking styles, so that therapy is accessible and effective for your child or young person.
This depends on the therapeutic approach and your child or young person’s needs. Some therapies are recommended as a block of sessions, with prices available on request. Your therapist will discuss the recommended length and frequency at the start, and review progress regularly.
Where appropriate, and alongside therapy and support strategies, our consultant doctors or mental health nurse prescribers may recommend medication for ADHD, sleep, anxiety, mood or other mental health conditions. See our Medications page for more.
