Binge Eating and Obesity Assessment for Children and Young People

EPIC offers consultant-led assessment and support for binge eating, obesity and weight management in children and young people across Devon and the South West, combining psychiatric, paediatric, dietetic and psychological care, with weight-management support where appropriate.

What is binge eating?

Binge eating disorder is characterised by frequent and recurrent episodes of loss of control and excessive eating. It can be associated with compensatory eating disorder behaviours, obesity and mental health difficulties such as anxiety, depression and other compulsive behaviours.

What is obesity?

Obesity is when body fat or weight is significantly higher than the normal range for age and height. This is due to a combination of genetic, behavioural, metabolic and hormonal factors. Obesity can lead to significant risks to physical health.

What do we offer?

Our binge eating or obesity initial assessment is with our consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist. If appropriate, this will be followed by physical health assessment with our consultant paediatrician or specialist GP and nutritional assessment with our specialist dietitian. A care plan will include individualised therapies with our clinical psychologists or other mental health practitioners, dietetic support and medications for low mood/anxiety if appropriate.

Where young people are significantly overweight with health complications, we may recommend weight loss medications or injections, within licence. This requires baseline medical investigations arranged with your GP or through our private partners. Our weight management package requires monthly review with our team of psychiatrist, paediatrician and dietitian. Where appropriate, we will also offer assessment and activity programmes with our occupational therapist, and/or advise regular mental health support.
